get away from/leave behind that miserable/lousy atmosphere/ambience

My comment:

there are many ways you could express this. "togliersi dalle costole" = get rid of a thorn in your side. The metaphor isn't completely appropriate here so maybe simply "get out of/get away from" the damaging situation.
"ambiente deteriore" is a "bad/cheap/lousy/pathetic/second-rate atmosphere." The context will dictate whether "ambiente" is best translated as atmosphere, ambience, situation...
