Context:

Salió de la ducha. Benilde pudo ver como si dirigía en dirección contraria a su habitación, cerrando la puerta con pestillo. Llevaba una toalla atada a la cintura que dejaba rastros por el pasillo que Benilde acababa de limpiar. Se sentó en una de las sillas de la concina. Untó una tostada con mantequilla.

"¿Qué se puede esperar si no se está esperando?" se dijo.

"What can I expect if one can't expect it from myself?"

- is there a possibility that she is commmenting on not being pregnant? ("no se está esperando"), in which case it is a play on words.

My comment:

What is there to expect if you are not pregnant.
(just a wild thought)
