Elles (seized art collections) parvinrent au musée avec quelques-unes des plus significatives expressions de l’art français du XVIIIe siècle. Boucher et Fragonard y jouaient les chefs de file mais ne pouvaient faire oublier de nombreux autres maîtres, leurs contemporains, « sauvegardés » au cours de la même opération.

I think it means something like "[they] were at the head of the line", meaning their work was thought of as the most valuable, or some such thing. Is that correct? Thanks
