I agree with Sheila, no need for salt. I must say that in layman's parlance, it would be called a "salt spreader", but this is a technical text where "brine" fits.

I think this is the term....

If it is a question of moving salts from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration...

It depends on the context, but osmosis is the movement of molecules in solution in this way (across a semi permeable membrane) until both concentrations are balanced, and diffusion is the movement of particles in solution or gas, without a semi oermeable membrane.
