The usual term is "first runner up" for the girl who comes second and "second runner up" for the girl who comes third.

No, those are terms for other competitions. In beauty pageants, the runners are called princesses. It's Miss Xxxx > first princess > second princess. Take it from a native speaker.

Hpefully this is one of those pageants where theyve dropped the swimsuit competition and the women are judged on their braininess and their dedication to social causes. I hope the days when beauty contestants were paraded like so much "meat on the hoof" (cattle/chattel) are long gone.

Hi Barbara, I think that your translation would be va lid for the successor of a King (in France, the Dauphin de France was the elder male child of a King and was the successor of his father when the latter died. But in the case of a Miss contest, the runners-up are not supposed to succed to the elected Miss. They are awarded a one-year-lasting title just like the Mss herself.

They would too succeed the winner if something happened to the first-place winner such that she would not be able to carry out her duties (serious illness or injury) or if orgnaizers of the pageant found out that she was involved in some behavior not befitting the persona that she is suppossed to convey to the world.
