unrestricted would be too strong, I would think something along the lines of "classified as less threatened than they are now" (by corrosion from the fog)

First of all, I am assuming a gap between the two "s"s.
Then, I came across the following passage in a "Citreon C6" Catalogue :
"Une prestation acoustique et vibratoire de haut niveau apporte au conducteur et à ses occupants le plaisir et le confort d’un habitacle à l’ambiance feutrée.

In the context, this would mean that a particular zone of testing is split up into discrete and varied sub-zones for the thorough testing of a vehicle or other machine.

The closest thing I could find in my techncal dictionary was "desservir." One of the possible meaning is "to damage."
