In fact I think you can use it. I know this is about tinnitus (acuphènes). It is a sort of noise you hear in your ears only. Sometime is louder, sometimes not. Exactly as it is described in the text. They say that sometimes the noise the person hears is so loud, that a doctor can even hear it during an examination... so I think you can say something to the effect that the tinnitus he had when he was young was as loud as the sound of rifle shooting.

My comment:

Yes, it means "rifle shooting" (just one 'f') )and that sport may cause hearing problems (he used to do it when he was young).
