The expression has not much sense because the bourgoisie did not cease to be yet. Moreover, the other Latin synonyme - civilis < cives romanus (>civitas = town) = fr. bourgeois < Lat. burgus is used in a very positive sense today. See: civil organization, civil rights, courage civile...
