John and Gina have both understood the French meaning, and I agree with John that the word "trial" conveys the sense of "contradictoire, as opposed to a Jugement par defaut, where only one party was heard.

Here "trial" conveys the sense of "contradictoire". The matter was "tried", meaning that all sides were heard and weighed.
