just a guess - I believe the author is describing something positive - a combination of "not serious" and "yet serious".

This is hard to translate. Per what I understand the author is trying to tell you that this particular lobby is very stylish without appearing antiseptic, and still bears some originality.

man müsste ein Bild haben! dann könnte ich genau sagen, was gemeint ist. In Architekturkreisen gibt es immer die Abteilung "Schattenfuge-Brett" (alles sehr eckig und glatt) und die Abteilung "überladen". Der Ausdruck wirkt auf mich fast abwertend, weiß aber nicht genau in welche Richtung, ob nun "aalglatt" oder "verspielt".
