given the misprint of 'las' for 'la' my hunch would be that the writer has simply failed to type the circumflex and the verb is paraître - appear, not parer, which makes no sense in the context

Sorry, the "las" is a typo. But the original really says "parait" without ^. That's why I thought the verb is parer, sorry.

The verb is not "parer", but "paraitre". So the translation is: ...the document seems to be a promising baseline for solving the problem.
