My comment:
Geographically part of Argentina and Tierra des Fuego (there is no English translation for this "Land of Fire", literally from Spanish) . Politically the Falklands are part of the British Overseas Territories but since 1833 they have been claimed by Argentina. There have been a lot of wars to conquer the Falklands, the last one was in the 1980s in which Prince Andrew took part.
You can use "the" in front of the name, but most people just call them "Falkland Islands". The informal use is "The Falklands", but this can't be used in an official text.
