My comment:

Span (length), the width of a human hand. (Wikipedia)
"Spanning" may means a verb made of a noun (span) - something that unifies two places, times, categories: from...till.
Or in your case French "entourer" (Lat. circumdare), as it is only one thing to be comprehensed.
