Significa "il re non fu da meno del suo interlocutore", nel senso che la sua risposta è stata in linea e non inferiore con quanto detto dall'altra persona sia in termini di contenuto che di forma (se si tratta di un elogio, anche il re lo ha elogiato altrettanto; se si tratta di una critica, anche il re lo ha criticato con la stessa asprezza, se si tratta di una difesa, anche il re lo ha difeso con la stessa forza, ecc...).
