This is rather like the untranslatable 'Le grand Meaulnes'....

From Piedmont: Piedmontese / Del Piemonte: piemontese

It is a so-called "accrescitivo" (augmentative). Thus, I think "great fellow" would convey both the ideas: large size and kindness.
