Fig., scherzosamente, alti, grossi papaveri, persone molto importanti nella vita pubblica, persone influenti (con allusione alla leggenda romana secondo cui Tarquinio il Superbo, per dimostrare al figlio come impossessarsi di Gabi, abbatté con un bastone i papaveri più alti del suo giardino). È usato anche per indicare persona o cosa tanto noiosa da provocare il sonno.
