My comment:

Unfortunately, 'diehard', 'fanatic' and 'zealot' are all to some degree pejorative. If 'doctrinaires' is meant neutrally or as a term of praise, 'diehards' is still acceptable in the phrase 'diehards and pioneers'. In the latter case, 'radicals', 'true believers' and 'devotees' are all possible accompaniments to 'pioneers'.
