My comment:

I agree with the previous comment re the meaning, but this would be a much more idiomatic way of expressing that in English.

Sorry! The submitting went off without me finishing. I meant to say: At the sight of their true essence. In this case the text is referring to the uncovering of someone's true identity. At the sight of their real selves. At the uncovering/revealing of their true identity.

when they realised who they really were. I suppose the "arma" is the radio broadcasts which resisted English bombing but fell/succumbed when they came face to face/encountered to the British. If this is the essence, there are many ways of putting it
