I say riffs, because you could put almost any word there that sounds cool....the "levels" of the music can be: the melody, the harmonies, etc.
It also depends on what kind of band it is: if it is jazz, you could say he plays great riffs. For instance. I have a hard time seeing music depicting dreams and fears...but never mind about that.
