I agree with one of the other comments, that this section is really talking about the problems the writer has, not literature itself.

My suggestion: ...language, which I consider to be the only real and profound literary problem, requiring a constant watch (or heed or attention), the core being language handling and tension rather than stories, reality or fiction.

That is what it means....but one wonders about sentence....because it is the writer that is being stalked, not literature. Personally, I would say: on the prowl in literature....
