not to be held responsible for/not to answer for/not to account for; I imagine differenze refers to some amount that must be given back/paid for, i.e. his brother had not paid all

Not quite sure what the "differences" refer to, so I'm not completely sure if my suggestion makes sense. However, "rispondere di qualcosa" means to be accountable/answerable for something.
