"readdress the balance" is a common collocation that could work nicely.

"I am already old, and it's better that I go rather than someone young. I have lived; it is now my time to readdress the balance." (or "it is now time that I readdress the balance".)

My comment:

I think that Clara's suggestion does not sound right in the context: the narrator has already lived what no young person can live, that's why he considers it normal to compensate for a life richer than what young people today can experience.
