A la iluminada de mi suegra Katy (la llamaba suegra aunque en verdad no era, mira que vida tan triste) se le ocurrió levantarme a las seis de la mañana, después de mis noches de borrachera.

With the long parenthesis which cuts the sentence, I find it more convenient to transfer the meaning of "iluminada" to the word idea.

In English, you have to add the indefinite article in phrases like "his idiot of a brother".
