[In order to understand what is happening to us] faut-il se limiter aux critères de preuve
« dure des stratigraphes ?

Is this simply 'hard proof/evidence'? Text goes on to discuss evidence from other phenomena, not just those studied by stratigraphic geologists.

Stratigraphic levels of quality can also be used. Taking it literally or word for word will not work in English you need to get the gist of the author.
