Language pair:

French > English

Subject:

Sciences / Non-fiction books

Level of diffculty:

Easy / medium

Word or term in question:

plus il sera trop tard [inthisconstruction]

Context:

Plus on avance sur la trajectoire en cours d’émissions de gaz à effet de serre, plus il sera trop tard, plus l’avenir sera contraint et rétréci par le passé.

The sense of the all the phrases (including the one given as the 'key' phrase) is perfectly clear, but I'm having difficulty marrying up the metaphors coherently.

Keywords:

Climate change

The farther/ further you move along the path of greenhouse gas emissions, the sooner you will reach the point of no return, and the more the past will coerce and shrink your future / prospects

More, the more

My comment:

"The more we progress by emitting greenhouse gases, the more it will be too late, the future will be more constrained and narrowed by the past." Just a suggestion
