Context:

...à l’insu parfois du conscient moderne des scientifiques qui le portent et de leur « gestion » d’un « système terre » vu d’en haut....

I know I'm tired, but 'qui le portent' is making no sense at all here.

"le" must refer to something in the beginning of the sentence which you don't give us

Au contraire, that IS the whole sentence. And it's at the beginning of the paragraph too! 'le' seems to refer to 'le conscient moderne' - at least that's the only grammatical fit.
