"they left through the back door"

My comment:

The phrase "como la chacha" refers to the maid of the house. Back in the day (although not that long ago), maids were cheap labour for the owners of a dwelling, often receiving small wages for their labours. When the maid was offered a better-paying job elsewhere (or were simply bored), they often left by the back entrance (the "service door"), without any notice or warning to the owner and , sometimes, taking something of value with them as 'remuneration' for the last week's/month's salary due them.

they scrammed through the back door

My comment:

la chacha is colloquial for a nurse or a servant. The phrase means to go away ithout saying goodbye and through the back door like a servant.
