Speaking as a musician....
I can't think of a more succinct way of saying this, because it's not so much thinking of the piece as joyful as putting oneself in that frame of mind in order to communicate the mood/feel/emotions implicit in the piece. And then certainly the fingers will do the rest.

I agree with martynback and your answer-reference from Art appreciation credit unit at university as part of History of Art course. We learnt that the music player must himself be in that frame of mind in order to transmit the feeling to the audience when he plays the music, and I find it very true.
