seem more idiomatic to me. Gibberish is more "nonsensical", chicken scratch refers more to the visual aspect.

I don't think it means gibberish (charabia) but "scraboutcha" (which I've never heard of) must be the equivalent of gribouillage. So I agree on bertrand Delevaux's "doodle. The rest of the context proves that the narrator is criticizing a painting.

I found "craboutcha" only no "s" in it.
