Without much context, it's hard to be more precise or creative. Hamblock/Wessels offers "to become independent/self-employed" for s. verständigen. There are also discussions archived on LEO and dict.cc that provide other options. I could also see "divided/separate/split off/spun off/ hive off (GB)/become two separate entitites..." hence the context needed.
