L'italiano è una lingua ad accento libero, nel senso che non è possibile sapere a priori su quale sillaba cade l'accento, a differenza di quanto avviene in altre lingue (per esempio in ungherese l'accento cade per lo più sulla prima sillaba, in polacco sulla penultima, in turco sull'ultima). In italiano l'accento tonico può avere valore distintivo, dal momento che alcune coppie minime di parole si distinguono solo in base alla posizione dell'accento: àncora~ancóra, càmice~camìcie, prìncipi~princìpi; si pensi inoltre alla serie càpitano, capitàno, capitanò. Le parole formate da più sillabe oltre all'accento primario, che cade sulla sillaba tonica, hanno anche uno o più accenti secondari, un po' meno intensi rispetto a quelli primari. Nella parola rèdazióne l'accento primario cade sulla sillaba zio, mentre quello secondario sulla sillaba re. |
