Petrarca scrisse un numero imprecisato di altre poesie, talvolta anche occasionalmente e senza più darsene cura. La raccolta di fogli autografi costituita dal manoscritto Vaticano Latino 3196, contiene alcune di queste poesie "disperse". Ma delle molte poesie attribuite a Petrarca pochissime sono di sicura paternità.

The meaning to be conveyed is: he didn't worry at all, he didn't give the issue much thought. I.e.: he didn't get in a sweat about that !!

I think the image conveyed by "offhand" is suitable in this context since it alludes to the hand f the writer.
