"le sole dell spezie" (in source text) = le *i*sole dell*e* spezie (2 typos, not just 1!).

Then you can read about further sailing expeditions to the so-called "Spice Islands" - apparently with capital "S" and "I" - after the first discoverers had explored and drawn maps of the area...
