NB 1. Tartar = fat-free scrabed beef or horse meat, without any tendons and Tartar = always prepared raw and always eaten raw! 2. As to Jean de Joinville (13th century), the Tartars (Mongol warriors) ate raw meat - but on beforehand they tenderized the meat by putting it under their saddles! However, Joinville never met these people, he just wanted the Tartars to be seen as totally uncivilized! Nevertheless: they were aggressive and belligerent, martial and unscrupulous, spreading fear and terror, scaring and frightening ... But it's a proven fact that thin slices of meat prevent riders from saddle sores caused by rubbing! ;-)

I agree. Maybe tartaro has something to do with crude meat and would mean that it is easy to tell it's just a lie. (it is not well cooked up)
