without any lenience

My comment:

"compréhension" has the connotation of meaning a reprieve or lenience from from the normally imposed penalty. In this sentence, the author is saying that the roundup started in the private collections without relenting, "without any lenience" (to the interests of the French interests), quite to the contrary.

any different understanding

My comment:

Despite the ousting of the minions of Ribbentrop, developments do not seem favorable to French interests.
The raid that began in private collections will continue without slowing down or any different understanding, quite the contrary.
