Barbara R. Cochran, MFA  See profile asked this question:

Language pair:

French > English

Level of diffculty:

Easy / medium

Word or term in question:

lion de pierre abattu

Lion de pierre abattu à côté du mirador d’où était surveillée l’entrée du Jeu de Paume (archives du musée Carnavalet).

This is a caption to an illustration that appears in the book I have been translating over the past few months. I found a photograph of this fierce looking creature on the Internet but have been unable to find a translation for "pierre abattu". Thanks

"Stone statue of a slain lion".

My comment:

It's the lion that was "abattu" (killed), not the stone.
The slain lion is a fairly common subject of monumental statues.
