You can tell the author that "chick" would definitely be the right word, since it's only used when talking ABOUT someone (i.e., girls), but never to address them.

Here in the United States, "girlfriend" is sometimes used in a casual kind of way, even between two women, which means nothing more than that the other person who uses it thinks positively of the one he or she is directing it to, or that he or she considers the other to be a kindred spirit.

I would leave it more neutral. it sounds like one of the options you wanted to choose (kid) doesn't really apply, and chick is too specific for a certain group of speakers. I believe girl would work great.
