Teclas cuadrado y asterisco, como decir teclas 1 y 2.
Cuadrado (DRAE) en su acepción de espacio entre caracteres albéticos o numéricos, que es generalmente la función que cumple en los aparatos telefónicos fijos y celulares.

My comment:
Used on telephones in this area in Spanish (California). This follows Mexican usage. The necessary question becomes, "Where is this translation going to be used?" This translation requires localization. Some answers, for example, are correct for Spain, but not for Mexico.

En España a # se le llama "almohadilla". En los países de hispanoamérica no sé.
