Context:

Etienne saisit la liasse d'une main mal assurée et commença à lire. Le nom de la société contractante "Galaxy", ne lui disait rien. Le nom et l'emblême de la société en haut à gauche, qui tenait en trois lettres, n'était en revanche que trop familier. Il égrenait les articles dans un style ampoulé, oú la tradition bureaucratique le disputait à une maçonnerie exotique, oú le pur métal croisait le rassemblement de ce qui est épars au milieu d'une chaîne d'union et d'anneaux de verroterie.

My comment:

That's what I can make out of the architectural jargon used by the author. Does "pur métal" mean unpainted, unpolised, or something else remains to be found out. Without a picture, it's mere guess work.
