that gives an idea of its dimensions

My comment:

For the Amazon River, you can speak of its 'dimensions': length, width, volume (of water), mouth width, size of its basin, etc etc. Not 'size'.

My references:

Just google: "Amazon River" "dimensions"
and you will find plenty of examples, like:

Barbara, Sorry yesterday I didn't have the time to highlight the pertinent sentences with little stars, I hope you find them in the above references, though - for example by using the SEARCH (Ctrl+F) function. May I add this Wordreference.com reference: 'dimensione (misura: grandezza) = size, scope, magnitude, ***dimensions***. E.g.: Annotati ***le dimensioni della fotografia*** così possiamo comprare una cornice adatta = Write down ***the dimensions of the photograph*** so we can buy the right sized frame.'

Barbara, "gives the measure of its IMMENSITY" is probably a good answer too, see my comment under CMD's answer... I guess that is what the author meant, in fact...

Barbara, the more I think about it, the more I think you can just translate it literally: 'that gives the measure of its dimensions'. I think you didn't understand the meaning of the little used but standard expression 'give the measure of', which I explained in a recent comment. SO THAT WE ALL SAVE TIME, AS I HAVE ALREADY REQUESTED, IN THE FUTURE WOULD YOU PLEASE TELL US WHAT IS THE PROBLEM: UNDERSTANDING THE SOURCE TEXT OR PHRASING IT IN THE TARGET LANGUAGE. All the more that you usually ask more than one word, i.e. an entire string. Which sometimes leaves us wondering what the problem is, and this website offers little room for interaction, including BEFORE ANSWERING. And we are not mind readers yet. Thank you very much.

I agree to the first part of your translation solution, except that "size" does not reflect the many measurement parameters of the Amazon River (the longest on Earth with the Nile River!) and it huge drainage basin. Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amazon_River : The Amazon River 'is the largest river by discharge volume of water in the world, and by some definitions it is the longest': already TWO PARAMETERS, DIMENSIONS. And it goes on, lower in the introduction: Its average discharge is 'greater than the next seven largest independent rivers combined—the Amazon represents 20% of the global riverine discharge to the ocean.[14] The Amazon basin is the largest drainage basin in the world, with an area of approximately 7,050,000 square kilometres (2,720,000 sq mi). The portion of the river's drainage basin in Brazil alone is larger than any other river's basin.' Etc etc. Plus, do you speak of a "size" if you only spoke about it's length?...

Dear CMD, a) Does the term "size" fit the context of the largest river on earth, with many record-breaking parameters, thus "dimensions"? b) "give the measure of" is a correct English expression (https://www.wordreference.com/iten/dare%20la%20misura) (in French: donner la mesure de - https://www.cnrtl.fr/definition/mesure), but I have googled it with "size" and "dimensions" and got NO OCCURRENCE AT ALL... So 'gives an idea of' seems to be a better option here, as Roberta suggested, which is confirmed by the 2 links I put in a comment to her answer (Reverso context + a Wordreference forum discussion thread).

"gives the measure of its IMPORTANCE/IMMENSITY/VASTNESS" (or a synonym of "importance/magnitude" - https://www.wordreference.com/synonyms/magnitude : IMMENSITY, VASTNESS,...) might work better. Or "gives an idea of how huge it is" might sound more English, but more colloquial (or a synonym of "huge" like "vast", etc, to be found at: https://www.wordreference.com/synonyms/huge). => I would say: "gives the measure of its IMMENSITY" - because the author is giving measurements and numbers. "Measure" means "REFERENCE POINT", "POINT OF COMPARISON" here. In CNRTL.FR, it says "β) Donner la, l'exacte mesure de." under "B. − Au fig. 1. [Évoque un rapport, une proportion] a) ***Élément de référence***, critère d'appréciation des qualités d'une personne, de ses capacités ou de ses moyens, ou de l'importance d'une chose." So "gives the measure of its SIZE/DIMENSIONS/IMMENSITY" is NOT CONTRADICTORY NOR PLEONASMIC. I guess this was Barbara's question, after all.

It is your opinion alone, exegete, and nothing more than that! What do you want with all your endless comments and explanations? You know only one sentence, but no context, no source text etc. Nevertheless, you immediately think, in your usual arrogance, that you can constantly judge and evaluate every answer! In any case, please, my answer is for Barbara and not you! You are not the questioner!

My dear CMD, I totally disagree with the second part of your above comment, i.e.: 'You know only one sentence, but no context, no source text etc. Nevertheless, you immediately think, in your usual arrogance, that you can constantly judge and evaluate every answer! In any case, please, my answer is for Barbara and not you! You are not the questioner! ': 1) We do have the CONTEXT, as I explained. 2) Some explanations SEEM LONG but they are a series of google search results, to make it EASIER for the Asker. 3) Your answers are to be read by other potential Answerers, so they can judge if they can offer a better translation solution. 4) I have every right to "judge" your translation suggestions, and it is not "arrogance". 5) Referring to one of your recent comments to someone else's translation suggestion (see, you do it too!!), from German to French (MY mother tongue), your comment was SO AMBIGUOUS (i.e. with a DOUBLE MEANING) that you made ME lose a lot of my precious TIME! (by saying: "YES, it means 'porter pour assouplir' ('eintragen' instead of just 'tragen'), whereas the Answerer had answered 'porter': SO DID YOU AGREE OR DISAGREE?... 6) Which, also because of some other of your translation suggestions, led me to think that you are not a perfect translator, to say the least. Does that answer your questions? Amen.
