Osteopenia is the condition of bone before it reaches the stage of osteoporosis. It's thinner than normal bone, but not as thin as in osteoporosis. Sometimes treatment is started when a person has only osteopenia so that the condition doesn't fully develop into osteoporosis. BUT, since the word ends in -zante, it could mean treatment (such as prednisone) that causes osteopenia. There isn't enough context to know which meaning.
