Mon grand frère était revenu à la maison dans un état on ne peut plus critique.

I don't know what is the theme of your translation, but I think that they took him away after arguing with him and physically abused him.

Yes, this is probably what it means. I have done many such translations (in my case from the Congo) and there are always bits which are ungrammatical. In these cases I've more or less guessed from the context what it means and put a note about it at the end.
