siu is a mispelling , can't be siu, but si , which is not translated because the verb isn't reflexive in English

I would guess "sia" was originally intended, got mistyped and then "era" used. Or the other way round, the "era" was to be replaced with "sia", which got mistyped and then the "era" was not deleted. Since it is something that definitely did happen I would guess the indicative would be correct here.

I think this is a typo in the Italian text and should read 'si era occupato', ie 'was engaged in', 'occupied himself with', or 'busied himself with'.
