I believe the original is in error and that the author meant to say "strung along" and not strung out. Strung along means left hanging or waiting. Como la novia del rancho...vestidita y alborotada.

En este caso no creo que se trate de ninguna de las definiciones que han señalado los colegas ni de slang (ver abajo), sino más bien de "engañado" o "embaucado", el texto precisamente enfatiza que NO estaba tenso o nervioso sino más bien otra cosa y que XXX pudo haber hecho algo al respecto la noche anterior. Se me ocurre que es más como "deceived", pero puedo equivocarme...

Strung out - Los compañeros ya señalaron las acepciones directas, añado que en sentido figurado (slang) puede significar: hecho un manojo de nervios - estar hasta la coronilla - estar hasta la madre... pero dado que la conjunción "but" señala un contraste, (sino, en español) no podemos colocar un sinónimo de "stressed out" para "strung out", sino algo distinto.

Tenso refers to strung out, fraught, uptight, heavy laden, tense, and strained. Others sometime use estirado for strung out but it can also be interpeted as over extended instead of strung out. Tenso is my best recomendation. Good luck.

'to feel strung out' significa estar bajo los efectos de una droga. Depende mucho del contexto (¿qué droga, qué tipo de lenguaje?) p.ej. estar ciego, colocado, ebrio, fumado, borracho, pasado, pedo etc.
