the banana seen from the window/the view of banana from the window was unexpected

My comment:

Were they really referring to "banana" or did banana signify something else?

the bananas visible from the window were not part of the plan

My comment:

Could it be that the'banana' was an exotic fruit at the time of the story, a fruit which was imported and therefore expensive? That would possibly indicate that the family Minerbi was well-off.

(hanging) bananas out the window...wasn't on the agenda (??)

My comment:

it sounds like this custom of hanging bananas at some window at the de Minerbi house has already been mentioned. Hard to know what exactly the bananas are doing at the window so can't be sure the translation is 100% correct.

My references:

"essere in programma" = to be on the agenda (Ragazzini 2004, Zanichelli)

Thank you for your input, Ana Maria. I was really confused by the phrase I entered as a question, because nothing had been said previously about the de Minerbi house or a custom of hanging out bananas at their place, or anywhere else. So I think I better stick with an almost literal translation.
