It it actually refers to "carta patinata".

But perhaps, if your context is not all that specific, you should just go with "paper".

in its generic sense, it's "paper". It could be carta da disegno (drawing paper), carta da lucidi (tracing paper), carta millimetrata (graph paper), or any number of others. I don't think it's canvas, which is "tela". But from what you say, it's probably "parchment" (carta pergamenata).
