My comment:

The subject of "precedetti" can only be "I", i.e. the protagonist.
The subject of "arrivati" is "we".

I guess it could be possible, 'cause the doctor walked slowly when climbing the stairs.

Not sure about this interpretation, but it reads as if there is a comma implied after "arrivati a casa" (having arrived at the house), then the doctor precedes them, going up the stairs ahead of the others to deal with the patient.

More colloquially, 'beat the doctor to the house'.
NB 'anticipated' works in French but not really in English.
