Interesting. Is this about a wounded soldier thinking of his wife in the east or about a dead soldier "thinking" from the end of time and space, do you think?

I think the reference to distance between husband and wife is based on the poet's personal experience, which he then incorporates into the poem to provide an angle from which to approach the collective memory of war. Interplay between past and present seems to be key to this poet, not just in this poem. I don't think he's refering to a dead soldier thinking from the end of time and space. He's imagining himself as the wounded soldier in a historical context, though I'm not sure which particular war he has in mind. I'll ask:-)
