"vision" might stray to far from the original. I'd have to see more context. Maybe "wishes" would work.

I thought of another interpretation. I think it might mean that "the artist is free to follow his own desire." or "pleases himself." or "bows to his own desires." okay, one more suggestion... "follows his own instinct."
