"Materia" is one a subject or course in an undergraduate program.

I am from Brasil where the educational system is similar to the rest of Latin America. I have attended University in both Brazil and the U.S.A. and have lived in the UK for many years.

It's true that "materia" = subject, but in the context of a university course it's probably better translated as module.
El primer curso refers to the first year of architecture.
